The Guiana Shield underlies Venezuela, Guyana (previously British Guiana), Suriname (previously Dutch Guiana) and French Guiana, as well as parts of Colombia, and Brazil. The Guianas are often used as collective names for GuyanaSuriname, and French Guiana.

In the northeast of South America lies a geographic region called the Guiana Shield. This Precambrian geological formation is 1.7 billion-year-old. The higher elevations on the shield are called the Guiana Highlands. The Guiana Highlands are also the source of some of the world's most spectacular waterfalls such as Angel Falls and Kuquenan Falls both in Venezuela and Kaieteur Falls in Guyana.

Covering 270 million hectares, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) describes the Shield as an eco-region with “regional and global significance,” that is home to a variety of ecosystems and “keystone species of biodiversity.” The Shield also represents 18 percent of the world’s tropical forest carbon and 20 percent of the world’s fresh water allowing it to capture large quantities of carbon dioxide.

Climate, plants, animals and mineral resources in the Guiana Shield

As a whole, the Guiana Shield region has a tropical climate characterized by a relatively high mean annual temperature over 25 °C at sea level.

The whole of the Guiana Shield is covered by tropical Amazon rainforest. Since the individual peaks in the Guiana Highlands have been isolated from each other for millions of years, many plants and animals have evolved in a different way on each mountain. Many of the mountains are covered in permanent clouds and mist washing all the soil away and leaving barren rock and water. Because of this many plants are carnivorous and feed on insects and small animals. More than over 2,000 species of plants been found, and more than 50% are endemic to this region, meaning they are found only here, and many are only found on one peak.

Some minerals are found in large amounts in the Guiana Shield; diamondsgold, and bauxite are some of them but sadly the large-scale mining of these, is creating environmental problems.
